How to choose which creative project to work on?
I usually have several projects open at once. A weaving in progress on the loom. A mixed media piece waiting on the table. A visual journal sitting nearby, ready for whatever doesn’t fit anywhere else.
I like it this way. Having options feels like creative breathing room — no single project carrying all the pressure of being the only one.
But it does raise a question I come back to often: when I walk into my studio with a small chunk of time, how do I choose?
For a while I thought I should be more disciplined about it. Rotate through them. Finish one before touching another. But that never quite felt right for the way I actually create.
What I do instead is check in. Not with my schedule, but with myself.
I’ll stand in the space for a moment and notice where my eyes go. Which piece am I drawn to look at? Which one am I slightly avoiding — and is that avoidance resistance, or just honest disinterest today? Sometimes the weaving calls because I need something rhythmic and meditative. Sometimes the mixed media piece pulls because I have energy and want to make decisions. Sometimes the journal wins because I need to think out loud visually before I can do anything else.
The project that gets my attention that day isn’t random. It’s information.
I’ve learned to trust that pull, even when I can’t fully explain it. Your creative instincts know things your planning mind doesn’t. The trick is getting quiet enough to hear them.
So if you’re standing in front of several open projects wondering where to begin — pause before you decide. Notice what you’re drawn to. Then go there.
That’s usually enough.
